What we use them for
MPG sets the cost of the extra miles. A thirstier car makes a long detour less worth it.
Tank size sets how much cheaper fuel is worth. A bigger fill makes a cheaper pump more worth a short extra trip.
Real saving is the money you keep after that extra drive, compared with filling at the nearest station. That is why we say “worth the drive” or “not worth the drive” — not just the lowest pence per litre.
Can we look this up from your reg?
Not properly, not for free. The official DVLA vehicle check can confirm make, colour, fuel type and engine size. It does not include tank litres or official MPG. Paid car-data firms sometimes have handbook figures, but those are still estimates of real-world use. For now, a quick slider is more honest than a guess from a number plate.
